WV Faith Leaders Network

“When I first dipped my toe in public advocacy, I was worried about backlash from my congregation. What gave me courage was working with a clergy colleague who had experience speaking at public meetings, giving interviews, writing op-eds, and navigating congregational dynamics. Knowing another faith leader had my back made my advocacy work possible. This is why we started the WV Faith Leaders Network—so that all faith leaders can have the connection and courage to be bold public advocates.”

We are an interfaith network of clergy in West Virginia who mobilize for justice in our local communities and at the state level, taking our cues from leaders within historically excluded communities. Our network is open to clergy, or the equivalent leadership role, of all faith traditions.

“Never forget that justice is what love looks like in public.”

What we do

Connect

We build relationships among clergy who want to speak and act for justice, so that no faith leader feels alone when using their voice for public advocacy.

We bridge the gap between clergy, organizers, activists, and impacted populations by fostering relationships of trust to work together for social change in our state. Together we are powerful.

Equip

We provide virtual trainings on a wide variety of topics and skill sets for public advocacy.

We can help you write an op-ed or a letter to the editor or help you craft your speech for a public meeting of elected officials.

We provide education on issue areas and specific bills during our state’s Legislative Session—just sign up for our emails.

We can help you plan a campaign in your local community to address a local need with your elected officials.

Mobilize

Faith leaders in our network have taken the lead to pass non-discrimination ordinances, develop land acknowledgements, support the rights of immigrants, ban conversion therapy, address racial disparities in school discipline, and support harm reduction efforts. Faith leaders have also spoken in governmental meetings to oppose book bans, “camping bans” that criminalize unhoused people sleeping in public, bans on reproductive health care and gender-affirming health care, and the removal of Pride flags from public schools.

If you need support advocating for human rights in your community, or if you want to engage at the state level, we would love to help.

New in 2025

Regional network of faith leaders in North Central West Virginia

In 2025 we are developing a regional network of faith leaders in North Central West Virginia, building on the connections of clergy in the Clarksburg, Fairmont, and Morgantown areas. Faith leaders will have opportunities to gather, work together for change in their local communities around emergent issues, and engage in advocacy during the State Legislative Session.
